Some 15 young lads who were top players in the NOFA Cup Under13 football tournament last summer in Bacolod City, will start their quest together to be great footballers someday. Their destination, China.
Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) and its tireless president Ricky Yanson is financing the country’s top Boys 12 (born 2006) trip to compete in the Song Ching Ling Foundation Cup-ASEAN China Invitational football tournament in cities of Beijing and Hebei in China on Aug.11-18.

No less than NOFA Cup top scorer Kurt ‘Ading’ Sarip from Kidapawan City, Cotabato and MVP Jared ‘Jax’ Peña of De La Zobel will lead the 15 players and three coaches team that will represent the country in the week long tournament.
They will be playing against teams from China, Vietnam, Myanmar, and other ASEAN countries.
Ading Sarip, the ‘Little Maradona’ of Kidapawan is the son of government employees Samuel Sarip and Vismin Marañon Sarip of Kidapawan, North Cotabato.

Jax Pena, the ‘Tiny Messi’ of Muntinlupa City is the son of Engr. Jacob Peña III and IT specialist Maria Cecilia Reyes Peña.
Unknown to many, the selected players have been in contact with NOFA after the NOFA Cup and they have been invited to train in Bacolod during weekends to prepare for the China tournament. There could have been more players signed up for the China tournament but some players could not travel as they have problems with their documents.
Among those who could not travel is NOFA Cup best goalkeeper Ashley Sacapao of Bago City, whose parents are both working in the UAE.
NOFA Cup best defender Vigo Louis Herce also of De La Salle Zobel will anchor their defense while adding firepower up front is Elija Cedric Ballesteros of Colegio Sto. Thomas-Recoletos of San Carlos City,Negros Occidental.
‘WHIZ KID’ FROM SAN CARLOS CITY
ARRIVES IN MANILA
‘Zedi’ Ballesteros, ‘The Whiz Kid’ from San Carlos City is the son of big football supporters in San Carlos City Elias and May Ballesteros.
Players to watch in the line-up also include Lucas Andan also of De La Salle Zobel, and Julio Antonio Yoldi, the nephew of the legendary Yoldi twins of Dumaguete City.
Completing the line-up are Anthony Galve, Rafael Manuel Garcia, Matthaeus Lim, Miel Dee Marcon, Breindel Medina, Jan Emmanuelle Benedict Salceda, John Sinconiegue, Adrian Bacolod and Jed Amiel Tan.
Heading the delegation is NOFA official Andrew Infante. Head coach is Ronald Allan Treyes, and his assistants are Noel de Oca, and Reggie Miraflor.
They are now in Manila to play some friendly matches before they fly to Beijing on Aug. 11 for the tournament proper. (l.biantan@gmail.com)
