THE young boys of the Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) backed Philippine Boys 12 team face the ‘Great Wall of China’ as they start their campaign in the ‘Soong Ching Ling Cup’-ASEAN China Invitational football tournament against the powerhouse host today (Aug. 13) .

The lads are in Group A in the two-group competition also with Indonesia, and Cambodia. Teams in Group B are Thailand, Laos, Myanmar. and Vietnam.

WELCOME TO CHINA

They play China at 930 a.m. today (Aug. 13) and then clash with Indonesia at 4 p.m. in the 8-sided week long competition.

They will then play against Cambodia in their last elimination round match on Aug. 14.

The team, with delegation head and  NOFA official Andrew Infante, head coach Ronald Allan Treyes, and assistant coaches Noel de Oca, and Reggie Miraflor arrived in Xianghe, Hebei province last Aug. 11 and can not wait to see action against the host team.

XIANGHE IN HEBEI PROVINCE NEAR BEIJING

The Chinese team are reportedly bigger than them but they are ready to face them and they are confident that they can “Put up a good fight,’’ said a parent who has accompanied the players in China.

The young booters were top players in the NOFA U13 Invitational tournament held at the Sta. Maria field in Talisay City, Negros Occidental last summer.

The tournament was bankrolled by NOFA president Ricky Yanson. Yanson is also the main sponsor of the China trip of the NOFA Ph Boys 12 team.

According to delegation head and NOFA official Andrew Infante, the ‘Soong Ching Ling Cup’ started in 2016 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of China-ASEAN dialogue relations. The project was initiated by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, ASEAN China Center and the Chinese Football Association.

Infante added that the  ‘Soong Ching Ling Cup’ is designed to be a special exchange event for children as an initial step in exploring ways through friendly football matches and relevant activities suitable for young people.

“The matches are intended to introduce exchange mechanism on early age making football education and friendly interactions of children to improve government agencies relations between China and the ASEAN,’’ Infante added.
