SCORER IN THEIR BATTLE FOR THIRD AGAINST CHINA JULIO ANTONIO YOLDI WITH HIS PARENTS ANTONIO AND MAITET.

AFTER the forgetful finishes of the Philippine U16 and U19 teams early this year, the fourth place finish of the NOFA Ph Boys or U13 team in the ‘Soong Ching Ling Cup’-ASEAN China Invitational football in Xianghe, China is good news to success hungry football community in the Philippines.

The NOFA kids suffered their second loss in the weeklong tournament after they were beaten by China 1-2 in the grueling battle for third place.

China, whom they whipped 3-0 in the elimination round, came to the third place battle more prepared this time. The Filipino kids did not surrender and put up a fight from start to finish.

They even scored the first goal as Julio Antonio Yoldi found the back of the net five minutes before halftime.

In the second half, the tide of the match changed as the Filipinos committed a series of mistakes that cost them the match and gave China the bronze medal of the eight-team competition organized by the Soong Ching Ling Foundation of China to foster good relations between China and its ASEAN neighbors.

China scored the equalizer early in the second half after the Filipino defense committed an error.

Few minutes later, the Chinese booters scored  the winning goal with a break away counter attack after a Filipino forward was dispossessed.

The NOFA boys pushed for an equalizer but just could not score. They were also hit by some bad calls including a back pass which was called play on by the referee. This could have given the Filipinos a free kick inside the box.

SIGHT SEEING AFTER THE TOURNAMENT

The fourth place, the best finish of any Filipino young team in an international tournament this year, has put a positive look on the limping youth program of Philippine football.

Credit should be showered to NOFA president Ricky Yanson who initiated this project after assembling the top players that participated in the NOFA U13 Invitational tournament held in Talisay City, Negros Occidental last summer.

LAST SUMMER

Yanson wants to make the NOFA Cup a national tournament where top players from the Football Of Festival (FOF) of the different regional football associations go to Bacolod every summer to compete.

Top players will be once again selected to form the U13 national team just like what he did this year.

He also envisions with Japanese coach Reiji Hirata and San Carlos City Negros Occidental based national youth coach Juan Carmona, to form a football academy for national youth players in Bacolod.

With Yanson spearheading the youth football development in the country, we look forward to better results for our national youth teams every time they compete overseas. (l.biantan@gmail.com)
