Corpus Christi booters named to Philippine U16 training pool

CORPUS Christi School football program has started to reaped laurels after two of its young booters have been named to report to train with the Philippine U16 training pool from July 12-July 26.

Philippine Football Federation (PFF) secretary general Edwin Gastanes sent the invitations to young booters Rafi Rubio and Josh Go, their parents and local FA president Percy Guarin.

If they will perform well during the last phase of the training, then they will be named to the Philippine U16 squad which will play in the ASEAN U16 Championship n Surabaya, Indonesia on July 29-Aug. 11.

The training will be at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite and will be handled by national youth head coach Reiji Hirata. He will be assisted by PFF Technical Director Ariston Caslib and Coaching Education Head Marlon Maro.

Go and Rubio were members of the Elementary Northern Mindanao team that represented the region in the Palarong Pambansa in Legaspi City in 2016.

They were also members of the Goal FC/Corpus Christi Boys 16 team which won the title in the 2nd Friendship Cup Football Festival held at the Rosevale School field Uptown.

Raffi won the MVO award while Josh the Best Striker award.

Josh Go is the youngest son of Regner and Mercy Go while Raffi Rubio is the eldest child of Rogel and Vikki Rose Rubio. Josh and Raffi will leave for Manila on Thursday. 

“It is a great honor and privilege to be named to the Philippine training team. I am excited to be a member of the national squad,’’ said Josh Go who started playing football for Rosevale School during his elementary days but moved to Corpus School during his high school.

Raffi is also as excited as Josh Go to be a member of the training pool. “I am Excited to join the training pool because it has been my dream since i started playing football to play for the philippine team,’’ he said.

The selection of Rubio and Go is a big boost to the local football community which has also produced four national youth players, Troy Limbo, JB Borlongan, Jethro Borlongan and Greg Naguines.

Limbo is now in the UK studying at the Sunderland University and playing for its school varsity team while JB Borlongan is playing for University of the Philippines in Quezon City. Jethro Borlongan now plays for St. Benilde while Greg Naguines are playing for De La Salle Greenhills in Manila. (l.biantan@gmail.com)
