IT could have been the NOFA Ph Boys 12 team in the finals of ‘Soong Ching Ling Cup’-ASEAN China Invitational football tournament in Xianghe, China but the ‘gods’ of football have their own plans.

The boys of coach Cocoy Treyes were out-played by a stronger and more skillful Thailand team, 6-1, in the modified semifinals to bid good bye to their championship hopes.

“We were beaten fairly and squarely. The Thais were bigger and more skillful. They have been playing together for a long time. They have fantastic team work,’’ said delegation head and NOFA official Andrew Infante.

It was the only loss so far for the NOFA president Ricky Yanson backed team. The NOFA boys barged into the semis by topping Group A with a two-win-one draw slate in the elimination.

They beat China 3-0, drew Indonesia 1-1 and whipped Cambodia 9-0.

As a consolation, the Filipino kids came from behind to down a surprisingly strong Laos squad, 2-1.

They were down 0-1 at the half but Kurt Sarip and Julio Antonio Yoldi scored one goal each in the second half to frustrate the Laotian kids. 

One of the Laotian kid even got a red card in the end game for kicking defender Rafael Garcia out frustration of not getting an equalizer. His coach apologized to the Philippine coaching staff later.

Thailand topped the semis after beating China 3-0. Laos also won over China to secure the last final slot. Philippines and Laos finished the semis with one win-one-loss record but the Laotians advanced with a higher goal difference.

The loss to Thailand cost the NOFA kids the championship and they have to play China again today for the the third place.

“The Thailand match was a learning experience for the team. It was a humbling loss,’’ said coach Treyes in an FB message to the Philippine football media.

The NOFA kids are expected to do better against host and defending champion China as they have already defeated them in the elims. However, as host the Chinese are expected to go all out to preserve their pride. (l.biantan@gmail.com)
