THE family of starting goalkeeper Frank Barrera in Isabela City in the Island of Basilan specially his mother Cathy delos Santos Barrera have thrown their support to the team and the beleaguered goalkeeper of San Beda High School Tatay, Rizal branch.

“We told him that he did a good job during our video chat after the match. We are proud of the boys. They fought as a team and they did not blame each other. They comfort each other when hurt in every goals that Indonesia scored,’’ she said.

She added that they did not loose confidence and they showed their love for their country in front of the more than 10,000 hostile Indonesian fans.

“ I am prouder of the team as all of them are under age and are born 2003 while Indonesians are all born 2002. They are bigger built and have incredible stamina.’’

Cathy also said that she felt bad for her son. “From a mothers heart, I am crying for my son. I know that he will have lots of critics specially here in our place. But I believe in him. He keeps saying “Mom I am representing my country.’’

Cathy also added that it was for the first time that his son and his teammates played in from of a huge crowd.

 “It was for the first for most of them to play in front of a huge crowd. When he joined San Beda to play in the NCAA, we were encouraged by the San Beda coach to support Franc for the big league. His inclusion to the National team would boost his confidence that is why we agreed.’’

Cathy and her husband Jeffrey own a bakery in Isabela, the former capital city of Basilan. She was born and raised in Isabela like her son Franc and her three other younger children.

Franc according to Cathy has played football for his school Claret, in Isabela. It was his younger brother who started playing but when Franc tried playing he loved the sport and there was no more stopping for him.

San Beda signed Franc after the recommendation of the coaches of Ateneo de Zamboanga, Boloy Mendoza and coach Lee lanuza. He is now in Grade 9 and dreams of becoming a professional footballer and a pharmacist.

Franc has been away from his family for quite a time now. His only contact with them is through video phone. His sacrifices however has paid off as he made it to the national U16 team.

Despite the odds stacked against him. He is ready to continue man the goals for the lads. He will be tested again against Cambodia today. (l.biantan@gmail.com)
