ONE of the best young strikers here in Mindanao, Josh Go of Corpus Christi School, Cagayan de Oro City has made it to the top 23 of the Philippine National U16 team that will see action in the ASEAN U16 Championship in Indonesia on July 29-Aug. 11
The youngest son of Regner and Mercy Go flew to Manila with teammate Raffi Rubio last week for the second and final phase of training for the tournament. They trained with the new Japanese head coach of the Nation Youth teams Reiji Hirata and assisted by PFF Technical Director Ariston Caslib and Coaching Education Head Marlon Maro.
Josh Go was selected among the 45 final training pool members at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite. Unfortunately his teammate at Corpus School Raffi Rubio did not make the team and was sent home.
“We are very happy that Josh is successful but we are also sad that his best friend Raffi did not make the final cut,’’ said Josh father, businessman Regner Go.
According to Regner Go it was a very good experience for Josh as the Japanese coach was very strict. Their mobile phones were confiscated and they were allowed to use it only for one hour at night everyday to talk to their parents.
The parents were also not allowed to go near the players during training and contacts with the parents and coaches are not permitted. Only two players from Mindanao made the team The PFF will announce the final line-up soon.
The Philippine contingent to Indonesia will leave for Jakarta on July 29 as they team is now on the last phase of their preparations for the tournament. They are also playing friendly matches against older teams.
The selection of Go is a big boost to the local football community which has already produced four national youth players, Troy Limbo, JB Borlongan, Jethro Borlongan and Greg Naguines.
Limbo is now in the UK studying at the Sunderland University and playing for its school varsity team while JB Borlongan is playing for University of the Philippines in Quezon City. Jethro Borlongan now plays for St. Benilde while Greg Naguines is playing for De La Salle Greenhills in Manila. (l.biantan@gmail.com)
