NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Kenneth Ilajas dreams only of earning a college degree and giving his family in Sitio Red Island, Lumbia Cagayan de Oro City a better life.

His father Eliezar has no permanent job and makes a living buying and selling scrap irons. His mom Eva is a watch woman in a local billiards hall. The family lives in a small hut inside a government lot just beside the Ecoville Village, a relocation site of the Sendong flood victims in the Cagayan de Oro mountain village of Lumbia.

He has two elder brothers who are already married and who work in construction sites. They have not studied college. His younger sister is still in high school.

But Kenneth’s dream of getting a college education is slowly turning into a reality as the SM Group of Companies backed National Univesity has signed up the skillful winger and the heart and soul of the village club in Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City, Lumbia Raptors FC.

  

NU COACH MARI ABERASTURI DURING NATIONAL U19 TRIALS HERE IN CDO

He graduated from Lumbia National High School in 2015 and has prepared well to stay fit and improve his skills. NU coach Mari Aberasturi noticed Ilajas when he tried out for the National U19 team here in CdO last year. 

Kenneth, who was then studying Computer Graphics at the Southern Philippine College, failed to get a place in the Philippine U19 team but got a promise from Aberasturi that he will sign him for his NU team.

Last month, Ilajas got his plane ticket to the fly to Manila. He is now settled at the NU athletes quarters and has enrolled in the schools’ Department of Education program where he is taking BSED major in Physical Education.

“I thank NU and coach Mari for giving me this opportunity. I promise to work hard to achieve my dream not only to become a good footballer but also getting a college education,’’ he said.

The NU football program started only few years ago with the school undergoing heavy recruitment of players from the provinces. The school hired Mari Aberasturi only last year and from then the 48-year-old is laying down the program to make the school a powerhouse in the country.

Mari is and AFC A Licensed coach and was also responsible for implementing the ‘Ajax’ style youth program for Don Bosco Technology School in Cebu more than 10 years ago that made the school a powerhouse in school competitions not only in Cebu but also throughout the country.

Mari coached the NU bannered National Capital Region (NCR) football team to a golden finish last April in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

He is an all around player who can also play striker, midfielder and even a defender but his most comfortable position is in the wings.

Kenneth started playing football rather late at age 13. However, he is a fast learner and after only five years of training and learning to play the beautiful game, he has blossomed to be the heart and soul of the Raptors. He is also emerging coach as he passed the National Youth Coaching Certificate Course (NYCC) held here two years ago.

He is an all around player who can also play striker, midfielder and even a defender but his most comfortable position is in the wings.

He is also one of the pioneers of the Lumbia Raptors FC which was established in 2014 at the Sitio Red Island where the club has a borrowed pitch good enough for 7-A-Side football match.

Football has brought Kenneth to Manila where he is enrolled at NU owned by the the richest man in the country Henry Sy. Last year he was dreaming of just going to Manila. Now he has finally fulfilled his dream of riding a plane and getting a football scholarship in the Big City.
