AFTER the success of the 3rd  Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) Cup U13 Invitation football tournament, NOFA president Ricky Yanson announced that the tournament will go national in 2019.

He said that although they are still finalizing the guidelines, there will be elimination tournaments among the different football association with then the top teams going to Bacolod for the NOFA Cup national championships in the summer of 2019. The tournament for next year will be for players born 2007 and above.

Yanson also added that he has already sat down with Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Nonong Araneta and discussed that the Festival of Football talent search will be the elimination tournament for the NOFA Cup.

Every summer the PFF is organizing the FOF among different age groups to discover talents from the different regions. There is a draw back in these FOF talent search however, as many times regional FA’s show up with very few players and some of themdo not send teams.

Now with the NOFA Cup national tournament, Yanson said that this will be an incentive for the players and the FA’s to take the FOF seriously.

The current success of NOFA Cup and its coming nationalization is very positive for Philippine football. The state of the youth football in the country is not encouraging as there is no national competition among youth teams except for the Palarong Pambansa.

That is one of the reason why we have dismal performances in different age group tournaments abroad.

There used to be the Coke Go-For-Goal U16 national championship but after almost two decades it stopped in the early 2000’s and left a vacuum in the youth football development in the country.

With out proper development in the country’s youth system no wonder why there are very few home breed players playing for the Philippine Azkals. 

Indeed, the nationalization of the NOFA Cup is a big welcome to the Philippine football community. With NOFA organizing it, we expect it to be a sensation. (l.baintan@gmail.com)
