Banzon, Alforque lift SHS-Ateneo vs USC for CESAFI Girls Futsal Secondary crown

CEBU CITY — Cebu’s young and talented girls footballers Jodi Banzon and Maegan Alforque led Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu to a 5-1 win over University of San Carlos to capture the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Incorporated (CESAFI) Secondary Girls Futsal recently at the USC gym.

Most Valuable Player (MVP) awardee Maegan Alforque opened the flood gates for the SHS girls when she scored the first goal in the 14th minute.

Her striking partner Jodi Banzon then scored SHS’s second goal two minutes later in the 17th to start her hat trick. Alforque then added another goal in the 24th to complete her heads up performance in the tournament organised by CESAFI tournament manager Francis Ramirez.

Banzon, the only daughter of Bosconian and former footballer Jesus Banzon, then completed her hat trick when she booted in two successive goals in the 32rd and 35th minutes to insure coach Martin Ferrer’s championship win in the inaugural CESAFI football tournament.

Nanat Acosta of USC scored the consolation goal for the Lady Golden booters.

SHS-Ateneo’s goalkeeper Alexandra Gumilao brought home the Best Goalkeeper award while Mercy Canete of USJ-R pocketed the Goldern Boot award for scoring 15 goals in the entire tournament.

It was a sweet victory for SHS as they almost swept the elimination round until they drew with USC of coach Apols Bariñan 4-4 in the last day of the elimination round.

Bariñan was a long time coach of SHS and she developed all the players of the Ateneo school and even recruited Banzon and Alforque.

RUNNER-UP USC SECONDARY FUTSAL TEAM

She was recruited by USC last year and has been responsible for lifting the girls and women’s Futsal program of the school.

The USC College Women’s Futsal team captured the Women’s College title after sweeping the tournament winning against Southwestern University-Phinma 15-0, and University of San Jose-Recolotos 5-2. Kaira Amarga of USC won the MVP award, Lindsay Cabang also of USC the Best Goalkeeper award and Regina Pancit of USJ-R the Golden Boot award.

COLLEGE CHAMPION. USC WOMEN’S GOLDEN BOOTERS

In the elimination round SHS Secondary team defeated USJ-R 7-0, St. Mary’s School of Minglanilla 14-0, University of Southern Philippine-Foundation (USP-F) 3-1, and Southwestern University-Phinma 21-0.

USC on the other hand, won over USP-F 6-4, USJ-R 6-2, SWU Phinma 10-0, and against SMS 2-0.
