CdO Girls settle for silver in Batang Pinoy Futsal National Championships in Palawan

The Cagayan de Oro U15 Futsal Girls of coach Dhon Lazo made history for the City of Friendship after they placed second in the Batang Pinoy National Championships in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

The CdO Girls made up of top young players from different schools in Cagayan de Oro City, are the first to win a medal for coach Dhon in many years that he has represented Region X and Cagayan de Oro City in a national tournament.

Coach Dhon has led the Region X Girls Futsal teams to three Palaro but he failed to lead them to a podium finish.

Last Friday, Aug. 30 the CdO Girls advanced to the championship against a formidable San Carlos City team that has been trained under national youth coach and former national team player Juan Carmona.

The CdO Girls lost the match 0-3 and settled for a silver finish. Despite of the  setback the silver finish is after all considered already a big success for the Cagayan de Oro athletes who managed to win only 8 golds in the multi-event weeklong competition.

“Thank you Lord for this wonderful experience here in Puerto Princesa. Thank you dear parents for your trust for allowing your daughters to be part of the team. Thanks for all your prayers. Thank you also for the Cagayan de Oro LGU,’’ Coach Dhon Lazo was quoted in his Facebook account.

Coach Dhon added that the match against San Carlos City, was played according to plan until a mis-communication between one of his defenders and an attacking player allowed San Carlos City to take the lead through a header.

“After that, the girls lost composure. I also lost my assistant coach Jerney Miaco who had to fly back to Cagayan de Oro to coach Xavier University High School team in the District meet,” he added.

Coach Dhon also said that it was very challenging for his part and for the girls since the San Carlos City team they faced was very strong and very experienced. “ It was for the first time I have coached a team in the Batang Pinoy but I was lucky enough to play in the championship,’’ he said.

He also said that he has to get back on his training plans and revise his programs to improve further. “Although silver medal is not bad but I have to be better next time,’’ he added.

Coach Dhon also thanked the parents of the girls who supported them specially Roldan and Kizzy Kaamino, the parents of Kahlista Kyan Kaamino of Rosevale School, and Ms. Olive of Tailormade who sponsored their uniforms and the Cagayan de Oro LGU specially mayor Oscar Moreno for making their trip to Palawan possible.

The CdO Girls advanced to the semis after they placed second in their Group during the elimination round winning against Naga City, Dasmarinas and host Puerto Princesa City. They bowed to San Carlos City.

They then beat Mandaluyong City in the semis to advance against San Carlos City.

Malaika Chavez, a product of the Rosevale School football program but now playing for St. Mary’s School, was the star of the tournament for the CdO girls scoring a five goals.

She was however checked in the championship and failed to score a goal.The Girls are back in Cagayan de Oro City and will play for their respective schools in the CdO DepEd District meets to determine the participants in the Division Meet.
