AFTER MATCH. NORTHERN MINDANAO AND EASTERN VISAYAS TEAMS POSE FOR POSTERITY AFTER THEIR CLASH IN THE DAVAO CITY PALARONG PAMBANSA.
AFTER two spectacular wins against two lowly teams, the Northern Mindanao Star elementary boys footballers should not be complacent and prepare for the tougher quarter final match against the second best team in Group A on May 1st.
NORTHERN MINDANAO STAR ELEMENTARY BOOTERS
For sure the Northern Mindanao boys of coach Wilbert Racines will top their five team Group D after dispatching Eastern Visayas in their first game last Friday evening, 8-0 and then securing another lopsided 7-0 win over Cagayan Valley early Sunday morning.
EASTERN VISAYAS TEAM WITH COACH WARREN MIRAFLOR (standing left)
They will face another easy opponent Cordillera Autonimous Region (CAR) Monday morning at the UP Mindanao Campus turf in Mintal, Davao City before finishing the elimination round against a strong SSoccsksargen’s ((South Cotabato, Cotabato Province, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos) Region Athletic Association (SRAA).
WESTERN VISAYAS WHIPS CENTRAL LUZON, 5-0.
They have to top Group D to avoid powerhouse Western Visayas in the quarters. WestVi will surely top group A with only host Davao the only strong team in Group A.
CARAGA and Central Luzon are expected to get eliminated. Western Visayas represented by Bacolod City last year is the defending champion. But this time WestVi is even stronger, represented by Barotac Nuevo of Iloilo City.
WestVi whipped Central Luzon, 5-0, Friday but after watching the match, Northern Mindanao looks much better individually and as a team.
But to make sure that they will make the semis without hustle, the NorthMin kids should try to top their group to face the second placer of Group A host Davao, an easier team to beat.
Coach Wilbert Racines has assembled a very strong starting eleven which have bulldozed their first two opponents, EVRAA and CVARAA.
VANVAN SAMBAAN (left) CELEBRATES WITH DONN EBUñA AND THIRDY AMORES AFTER SCORING A GOAL IN THEIR WIN OVER EVRAA
SAMBAAN
Powerful striker and consistent scorer Vanvan Sambaan, of Pagatpat Elementary School scored four goals in their 8-0 against EVRAA Friday night and then scored two more goals in their 7-0, romp of CVARAA.
The 13 year old Sambaan and has already received scholarship offers from different schools but has not entertained them and wants to study at Pagatpat National High School for this coming school year and lead the school’s varsity team.
COACH WILBERT RACINES
Credit also goes to veteran coach Wilbert Racines for turning this squad into an efficient working machine that has already shocked two opponents. The team had plenty of time to prepare, actually four months since the NMRAA regionals finished in December of 2018.
The results of their preparation can be seen on the pitch and it showed their dominance of the EVRAA team which just finished their regional meet in late March.
DONN MESSI EBUñA IN ACTION WITH KARSTEN YAñES
DONN MESSI
Racines has also developed Donn Messi Ebuña of Corpus Christi school into an efficient play maker that has completely dominated the midfield. He worked with Jrand Hortelano to distribute the ball and connect the defenders and the forwards. He also scored the opening goal of the match against EVRAA. Ebuña has matured and is now the leader inside and outside on the pitch.
Sometimes Ebuña also dropped as a central defender when coach Racines utilised sweeper Kinsey Drew ‘Kid’ Yañez as a libero to confuse their opponents. This tactic worked many times and it worked in their match against CAVRAA when Yañez scored a goal.
But the most deadly attackers of the NMRAA team are the two tireless wingers Thirdly Amores from Valencia City and Matt Columna from Corpus Christi. The running duo were recipients of precise passes from Ebuña and Hortelano and worked with Sambaan to produce the goals. Julius Centro of Sayang Dalaga Central School of Misamis Occidental is also a work horse in the midfield providing support to Ebuña.
‘KID’ YAñEZ PROVIDES THE SOLID DEFENCE FOR NORTHERN MINDANAO
UNBREAKABLE DEFENSE
So far their backline has been unbreakable with Yañez marshalling the defense with the help of stopper Miggy Awayan of Gingoog, Sam Caperal of Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School (Olles) of Camp Philips and Andy Lugod of Rosevale School.
Yañez, Lugod played in Vigan but were not effective as Yañez got injured in their second match while Lugod was also used sparingly by then coach Mario Sumampong. This time however, Yañez and Lugod have matured and they have not committed crucial errors.
Goalkeeper Rawin Gementiza, a veteran of Vigan and Antique Palaro has grown taller and stronger. He is now a very reliable goal custodian and has kept a clean sheet twice already. He was caught napping when he misjudged a head pass from Ebuña against EVRAA. Luckily he caught up with the ball and cleared it to side.
He then promised his coach the mistake would not happen again and he proved it in their match against CAVRAA where he saved three attempts, two of them from one-on-one plays.
SO FAR GOALKEEPER RAWIN GEMENTIZA HAS PROVIDED TWO CLEAN SHEETS FOR REGION 10.
WEAKNESS
The only weakness of this team that I have seen so far are their bench. Von Quinito of Rosevale School can be plucked out and used in defence while Brad Aguiman of Gingoog can also provide firepower up front just like what he did against EVRAA where he came off the bench to score a goal.
But knowing coach Wilbert, he knows his team and can always make adjustments. He will know how to use his other substitute players, Ethan Vistan, Kenny Guion, Ethamus Facturanan, and Karsten Yañez.
There is no pressure as of the moment for the NorthMin kids but that would change once the team reaches the quarterfinals. Their only enemy would be over confidence and they should pray that their first eleven would not suffer any injury, otherwise it will be a tough road ahead of them.
This team is on the brink of making Palaro history. It is up to the players to make it happen. (l.biantan@gmail.com)
