After 96 minutes of tight encounter between UP Fighting Maroons and Adamson University Soaring Falcons, it was John William Abraham who literally rose to the occasion to give the Diliman-based booters the win over their worthy opponents.
Despite trailing for most of the match, UP did not lose hope and kept on fighting against the San Marcelino-based squad to notch a win and improve their standing to fifth place, tied with National University, with 10 points.
It didn’t start well for the Maroons though as Kyle Magdato put it at the back of his own net four minutes into the second half. A scramble inside the box saw Jesus Cayadong with the ball who then took a shot on goal. It was blocked by Magdato but his back heel tapped in in for the Soaring Falcons. Cayadong, eventually was awarded for the goal.
It took about 35 minutes for the Fighting Maroons to equalize when Roland Saavedra chipped the ball for Kintaro Miyagi inside the box. The team captain injected life into the Maroons’ offense after the header to put them level into the match.
From then on, they continued to push for the winner against the Falcons to make sure that they’re still in contention to defend their title. It was then on the 96th minute, the last minute of the match, when Abraham headed the ball past Adamson’s team captain and keeper Carl Viray to send the fans in pandemonium.
JB Borlongan delivered the free kick right outside the box towards the path of Abraham to salvage the win. The second year fullback found himself all alone against Viray before heading it past him making sure that they go home with all three points.
They will be heading into their next match on Sunday against the De La Salle University Green Archers with a rejuvenated feeling and the hopes of defending the title against worthy adversaries in the final four of the competition.
