After a disappointing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Far Eastern University Tamaraws in their opening fixture, an early goal on the seventh minute gave the University of the East Red Warriors their first win of the season against title contenders Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles.
UE Red Warriors took the early lead as Joshua Polinag headed the ball in from the corner on the seventh minute of the first half. Though the Blue Eagles continued to pile on the pressure, UE’s defence was just as solid as a wall to not let any chance get in. Even the goalkeeper made himself big to stop any attempts from Ateneo.
At the start of the second half, the Blue Eagles continued to pile on the pressure against the Red Warriors but they are matching each other like-for-like. On the other hand, UE kept on looking for the nail in the coffin as they continued to catch the boys in blue on the counter-attack.
Though the Blue Eagles tried to bombard the defensive wall of the Red Warriors, they just wouldn’t break probably because they just want to get this win and bounce back after their opening fixture defeat.
Ateneo standout Jarvey Gayoso has caught the cold footing as he didn’t make any solid impact. Credits to UE’s defence as they were able to hold the stalwart to scoring any goals for the white and blue.
“Talagang yung bounce back lang from the loss nung last game. Yun yung mentality namin.” UE’s head coach Fitch Johnson Arboleda said regarding his ward’s effort and tenacity to keep the lead.
The Red Warrior’s next game will be against De La Salle University Green Archers who will be looking to bounce back after a 3-1 defeat against University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers.
