The Philippines will face their biggest test yet as they take on Korea Republic. Here are three things to look out for as the Azkals make their mark in this year’s Asian Cup.
1. No Son, No problem.
South Korea will be without talisman Son Heung-Min for the first two games of the Asian Cup but it does not make them any less dangerous. The Azkals will still have to deal with a plethora of attackers from the Taeguk Warriors. One name the Philippines will have to be wary about is Forward Ji Dong-Won. The FC Augsburg marksman is not a prolific goalscorer, with only 11 goals to his name for his country. Standing at 6’2″ tall, he has the physicality to cause trouble to any defense in the world and it’s his ability to hold up the ball and bring the Taeguk Warriors dangerous midfielders into play that will cause problems for the Azkals.
He’s also capable of moments like this.
2. Michael Falkesgaard in goal.
The news of Cardiff City’s Neil Etheridge skipping the Philippines maiden Asian Cup is certainly a big blow for the team. But in his place is True Bangkok United’s Michael Falkesgaard. The Fil-Dane deputized for Etheridge at the recently concluded Suzuki Cup. But his performances in that last tournament has divided the fanbase. Blessed with height and cat quick reflexes, Falkesgaard has been one of the top Keepers in the Thai league but he has failed to bring that form into the national team. The Azkals will need Falkesgaard to be on the top of his game if they are to get something out of this matchup.
3. Eriksson vs Bento
It’s going to be a battle for redemption for both Managers. Both gaffers have had calamitous spells in the Chinese leagues before taking over their current posts. Bento was relieved of his duties from Chongqing Lifan after winning just 4 games out of 14 while Eriksson fared a bit better in his last stop with 6 wins out of 15. Both Managers will be eager to show the world that they are still some of the best in what they do. Bento has to show that he can get results with a good team at his disposal. Eriksson meanwhile will be out to prove doubters wrong and prove that he isn’t done yet and is capable of leaving a lasting football legacy to a basketball mad country.
