FR. Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) coach Bombet Rosales Aven is a typical football coach in our basketball obsessed country.

His team does not even have a decent football pitch and gets very little support. Despite against all odds he produces results.
Coach Bombet just recently upset a formidable Ateneo de Davao University squad 1-0, in the championship to give his school the women’s title in the Mindanao Peace Games held at the Caraga State University grounds in Butuan City.

The Urios Lady booters leaned on the free kick of 18-year-old center back Thea Libre to upset the highly touted Davao Blue Ladies. Libre calmly booted in her free kick from the right side of the field to insure the Urios Ladies the title.
“We do not even have a proper pitch. It is just sheer hard work of the players that won us the title,’’ Coach Aven said.

The FSUU Ladies advanced to the championship when they also nipped Cagayan de Oro’s Xavier University 2-1 in the semis. The Butuan Ladies scored first from a corner kick. XU however equalised five minutes later to make it 1-1 at the half.
Sixteen-year-old midfielder Danielle Napiza scored the winning goal in the second half from a counter attack to arrange a championship showdown with Ateneo de Davao ladies.
The FSUU ladies finished the elimination round with one win and one draw slate. They drew with Ateneo de Davao 1-1, and then smashed the Datu Ibrahim Paglas Memorial College of Maguindanao 9-0, to top their group.

It was a sweet victory for coach Aven, who finished his Asian Football Confederation (AFC) C License Course here in Cagayan de Oro under coach Juan Carmona two years ago.
“I just love the beautiful game and I am very attached to my players,’’ said coach Bembet, who also coaches the and teaches Physical Education at FSUU. He finished his Physical Education degree at the Mindanao State University in Malawi City.
