FIVE young local footballers recently joined the Milo-FCB Road to Barcelona Philippines Camp at the Cebu City Sports Center in Cebu.

Leading the five young talents are Vigan Palaro veterans Sam Salingay, of Corpus Christi School, Jerand Hortilano also of Corpus Christi School, and Rosevale School’s And Lugod and Carlo Bongocan. They were among the 160 boys and girls aged, 10-12 years old, who trooped to the venue for the two-day training and selection under Football Club Barcelona youth coaches Jordi Aguilar and Albert Batalla.

Now on its second year, the Road to Barcelona involved training on ball skills, keeping possessions, and the vaunted tiki-take system of possession play and passes.

The two day training also included the teaching of values like teamwork, effort, ambition, discipline, respect, and humility.

Seven among the 160 players will be selected for the nine-day training in Barcelona, Spain. The basis of the selection will be 70 per cent values and 30 per cent skills.

Ian Lugod, the father of one of the participant, Andy Lugod of Rosevale School, said that it was a very good experience for the kids as they were also taught values aside from skills.

“They taught the kids teamwork, humility, effort, ambition, and respect. They were also taught that when somebody makes a goal everybody should celebrate as a team,’’ said Lugod, one of the active members of the Rosevale football parents.

Dennis Bongocan, the head coach of the Rosevale School is also thankful for the opportunity that his son Carlo experienced.

“It was great. The kids learned a lot. I hope they will apply what they have learned,’’ he added.

Cebu coaches also assisted the Barcelona coaches in giving playing tips to the kids which they could bring to their various schools or clubs.

Cebu was chosen as host of this event because it has the most number of AFC Licensed coaches. It is also a hotbed of football and has countless of tournaments yearly.

Present during the training was Ethan Jacob Roxas of Springdale. He was among the players brought to Spain by Milo in the inaugural Road To Barcelona last year. (l.biantan@gmail.com)
