THE unknown Gaher FC of Bohol put the province in the country’s football map after beating the highly touted Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Savio team, 2-1, in the championship to capture the 3rd Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Invitational 11-Aside football tournament trophy at the Ateneo Campus pitch in Canduman, Mandaue City.

Gaher FC, the club based in the town of Garcia Hernandez, South of Bohol facing the island of Mindanao and with a tiny population of only 24,000, leaned on the heroics of their best player Basti Badayos to bring home the championship trophy.

Badayos, who went home with the Best Midfielder and MVP awards, was unleashed in the second half scoring two goals including a game winning one-on-one goal during the extension to seal their victory. Badayos struck first but DBTC equalized to extend the match.

“We just trusted each other and we played hard even though I did not have anytime to practice with the team,’’ said Badayos, who is now based in Pardo, Cebu City and plays and studies at the Talisay City National High School.

Badayos used to play and study in Garcia Hernandez but his family migrated to Cebu last year. He however plays with his former teammates from Bohol every time there is an inter club tournament like the Ateneo 3rd Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Invitational 11-Aside tournament.
The fleet footed 15-year-old Grade 10 student also thanked his coaches from Bohol Alvin Mangubat and Renz Abucejo for trusting him and letting him play for Gaher FC despite of now being based in Cebu.
RUNNER-UP DBTC SAVIO 3RD PLACER ROSEVALE SCHOOL CDO UNITED FC
Badayos learned to play football in Davao when the family lived there during his early elementary days. He learned to play football at Mintal Elementary School in Davao City under coach Dondon Fernandez.
He then continued playing when his family moved to Bohol where he was under coach Erwin Angalot of Cogon Elementary School in Garcia Hernandez and then coach Mangubat and Abucejo with the Gaher FC.
Badayos, whose father is related to Sun*Star Daily’s chief photographer Alex Badayos, had a magnificent tournament, scoring four goals including the winner in the championship.
He scored a goal in their opening game 1-2 loss to Ateneo de Cebu. His teammates Procopio Macalos and Humprey Salardo scored one goal each in their 2-0 win over DBTC Magone to arrange quarter final match against University of San Carlos Basic Education Department.
The Boholanos were unstoppable in the q-finals beating the young Carolinians 5-1. Badayos scored one goal while his team mates Aldrin Auguis, Humprey Salarda, and Andrei Guivencan scored one goal each. USC-BED had one own goal.
In the semis against the highly fancied Rosevale School/CDO FC of Cagayan de Oro city, the Boholanos leaned on the exhilirating three goal performance of their striker Aldrin Auguis to down the Oro boys, 3-1, and put them on a collision course against DBTC Savio for the championship.
Teammate Procopiio Macalos also went home with the Best Defender Award.
Rosevale School’s JL Carsaca won the Best Winger Award while DBTC boys won three special awards with Andres Custodio the Best Goalkeeper award, Andres Custado the Best Striker and Vaughn Pacaña getting the Golden Boot Award for scoring the most goals in the tournament.
Rosevale School/CDOFC brought back home the third place trophy after a 1-0 outclassing of SHS-Ateneo de Cebu.
The winners received a specially designed wooden trophy courtesy of Ronea Bagabuyo of Dapitan, a close friend of tournament organizer Engr. Nilo Ferraren. Bagabuyo has been doing the trophies since the first edition of this tournament.
Each member of the winning team as well as the special awardees also received an eagle-designed medal for their efforts on the pitch.
