ZIPPY Medalla of Xavier University High School blasted in the winning goal of the match as West 1 District defeated South District 2-1 to successfully defend its Girls Futsal title in Cagayan de Oro Palaro Division meet held at the Rosevale School campus hardcourt.
Medalla, the youngest daughter of CdO’s top football coach and currently the coach of University of San Carlos senior team in Cebu city Allan Medalla, scored from point blank with two minutes more remaining to insure West 1 win of coach Dhon Lazo.
West 1 is composed mostly of players from West District champion Xavier University and runner-up Liceo University.
West 1 took an early lead in the first half as Megan Wong hit the back of the in the 2nd minute to frustrate South District’s goalkeeper Coline Acelo.
South District booters of coaches Weng Dela Riarte and Paul Cabio came back second half as Gay Locking equalized to also frustrate West 1 goalkeeper Eunice Eduave. The South District is made up of players from St. Mary’s School in Macasandig and Corpus High School.
The girls from the South however failed to hold on to their lead as Medalla once again played hero to insure West 1 entry to the Northern Mindanao Regional Athletic Assocaition (NMRAA) Futsal event. The NMRAA is set here in CdO in the second week of December.
In the battle for third, West 2 composed of players from Bulua National High School, Pagatpat National High School, and Kalaanan National High School dumped East 1, 5-0. East 1 is made up of players from Abbas Orchard School and Regional Science High School.
West 1 advanced to the championship when it won over West 2 via penalty shootout 1-0 of coach Jun Actub, after 2-2 draw in the regulation. South District also made it to the final when it dumped East 1, 3-1 in the semis.
West 1 and South Districts advanced to the finals of the Secondary Boys and Elementary Boys football when they beat separate rivals in the semis.
The West 1 Boys Secondary team of coach Dennis Bongocan and composed of boys from Rosevale School, Liceo University and Xavier High School, whipped East 1, 5-0 while South District of coach Webbie Racines dumped West 2, 10-0 in their own semis match.
In the Elementary Boys Division, West 1 also advanced to the finals when it whipped West 2, 7-1, while South District advanced when it dumped East 1, 9-0. The finals are set this morning. (firstname.lastname@example.org)
